2024 Venice Bienalle - The Path

Palazzo Pisani Revedin, Venice, curated by @thisisamyjackson and powered by @shimartnetwork

Artwork by Dex Hannon

I am absolutely overjoyed to share that I am exhibiting at The Palazzo Pisani Revedin, Venice, curated by @thisisamyjackson and powered by @shimartnetwork

In this show SHIM repurposes the exquisite corpse technique to break down barriers to entry in the art world and promote inclusivity. By leveraging the concept of the exquisite corpse to create a collaborative artwork, artists are showcased from all over the world without the need for shipping physical artwork.

QR codes are displayed alongside, allowing viewers to scan them and be redirected to the physical work for sale via the online platform Artsy.

All of this promotes inclusivity, keeps the cost of showing great artwork to a minimum and reduces our environmental footprint.

Nice review in Leeds Living magazine.
Northlight Arts Centre: Abstract Painting Exhibition IV: A Journey Through Colour, Form And Emotion – On Until 7 October

Dex Hannon, who takes a more structured approach to abstraction. Hannon’s paintings are full of intriguing forms, almost geometric in places, and the balance between shape and colour in his work feels deliberate and thoughtful. But what really sets his work apart for me are the titles. They’re not your typical titles—they’re full sentences, almost like tiny philosophical statements.

One that stood out to me was “If we forget our past, we cannot understand our future.” This kind of title immediately piques your curiosity, urging you to look at the painting again and ask yourself how the forms and shapes relate to that idea. It adds a narrative element to the abstract, and I found myself spending extra time with Hannon’s works, trying to make connections between the visual and the conceptual. It’s the kind of art that invites you not just to look, but to think—and I found that incredibly engaging.

Blythian Memes

Showing at Fox Yard Studios - Blythian Memes

Experimental animation, capturing the essence of Blyth through the distinctive landmarks etched in my memory. In the process of traversing the local area with my dogs, I've absorbed the quirky local spaces, these are a selection of buildings or objects are 'memes' that are instantly recalled when I think of these journeys, seamlessly woven themselves into the fabric of my experiences.

The animation is a visual exploration of repeating and morphing patterns. Throughout this visual narrative, a symbolic. totemic sculpture emerges as a recurring motif—the omnipresent Wind Turbine. This towering structure not only punctuates the Blyth skyline but serves as a bold emblem of the future, heralding a new era of power to supplant the historical prominence of coal in Blyth's narrative. Through this work, I aim to encapsulate the evolving spirit of Blyth, where tradition meets progress and familiar landscapes transform into a canvas for the expression of contemporary narratives.
